Use Chat

Use Chat for a model conversation outside a coding harness. Chat uses its configured model connection and does not automatically consume an external Code subscription.

Start a chat

  1. Choose Chat in the sidebar and start a new chat.
  2. Select an available model in the composer’s model/effort control.
  3. Use Add for the attachments or tools offered by that model and surface.
  4. Enter the message and send it.
  5. Follow the streamed response and use the stop control if you need to interrupt it.

Configure missing API connections under Settings → Models. A Claude Code or Codex subscription login does not, on its own, configure Chat’s API access. The available model, tool, and attachment combinations can differ from Code.

Choose Chat or Side chat

Use a regular Chat for a separate conversation you want to organize in projects or history. Use Side chat inside Code when the subject is the current task and its transcript.

Opening Chat does not establish a Code filesystem workspace or permission to edit a repository. When you want a coding agent to run commands and change files, start a Code session with the intended folder and permission mode.

Recover a failed response

If the model is unavailable, confirm its configured connection and entitlement. If an attachment is rejected, inspect its type and the selected model’s capabilities rather than repeatedly resending the same payload. A partial response after stopping or an error is not a completed answer.

Use projects and history to organize or export conversations, images and attachments for media, and usage accounting to understand the route that records activity.
